Archbishop Murphy began his address to the Washington State Labor Convention by stating, “For more than a century, the Roman Catholic Church and workers have had a strong relationship.” He asserts Catholic social teaching consists of two main tenets: the dignity of work and the rights of workers. The archbishop calls on all labor unions to reach out to the poor and disaffected in society – to offer them a path to meaningful work. “Labor unions must constantly ask how they contribute to the quality of human life and seek ways to support the gift of human life which is the basis for the dignity of work,” said Archbishop Murphy.
