Archbishop Murphy delivered a keynote address on the role of the laity at the Pastoral Assembly Day for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. He began by acknowledging the tremendous growth of lay ministry since the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council. The archbishop shared his perspectives on the ecclesial appreciation of the laity and the core defining traits of lay ministry: passion, service and honesty. He also offered some observations on the challenges facing lay ministry and how to overcome them. Archbishop Murphy concluded by stating, “The bottom line for the role of the laity is to dare to appreciate life, to share that gift with others and to become what we are all destined to become – saints and poets.”
