Bishop Murphy in his homily cites the contradiction of today’s consumer society with the church’s central mission of answering the call of the poor, homeless and hungry. He uses the Gospel reading of the man called a fool by God for storing up his treasure for himself in place of making himself rich in the eyes of the Lord to underscore this contradiction. The bishop ended his remarks by saying, “And may the cry of the poor help us hear the voice of God speaking to you and to me and saying, ‘What you have done to these, the least of my brothers and sisters, you have done unto me!'”
