The importance of signs and symbolism in the Roman Catholic Church is the subject of Archbishop Murphy’s weekly Catholic Northwest Progress “In Joy and Hope” column. He shares how learning of a fire in St. James Cathedral in Seattle, WA prompted him to realize the meaningful place signs and symbols occupy in our faith tradition. “The charred walls, the smell of smoke, the burned vestments, the broken windows and countless other signs will linger not only within the sacred space of the Cathedral Church, but will also remain in my memory,” said Archbishop Murphy. “Yet, the most powerful sign and symbol for us as Christians is the Resurrection.”
