Archbishop Murphy began an annual tradition of celebrating the Red Mass in St. James Cathedral to recognize the legal and judicial communities of Western Washington in May of 1990. The archbishop called on all lawyers, judges and other legal professionals in attendance to focus on three central ideals from the word of God in their practice of law: justice, wisdom and service. “Service calls us to reach out to those in need of your wisdom and advice – to have a special concern for the downtrodden and destitute, the marginalized and manipulated,” said Archbishop Murphy. “May you be generous in your service to others.”
