The dignity of labor is the overriding theme of Archbishop Murphy’s address to a convention sponsored by the AFL-CIO. He strongly affirms the Catholic Church’s partnership with organized labor. The archbishop characterizes work as the expression of our dignity and an opportunity to participate in God’s creation. “Behind the Church’s social teaching on the dignity of work and the rights of the workers is the firm conviction that there is a connection between human labor and the presence of God,” said Archbishop Murphy. He challenges organized labor to reach out to those in need “on the edge” in society.
