Introduction

In this article published in Origins, Bishop Murphy identifies and explains the essential characteristics a quality candidate for the priesthood must possess. He says, “Moreover, in recruitment of candidates for priesthood, there is a growing consensus on the part of religious communities and diocesan presbyterates, as well as lay persons in the church today, that the quality of candidates for priesthood is a priority for the church of today and tomorrow. There is less and less the temptation to be conscious of the numbers ordained in contrast to the quality of those ordained.”
