Introduction
Bishop Murphy delivered this address to the National Catholic Education Association’s Annual Convention on the dual challenge of the dwindling number of seminaries and candidates for priesthood faced by the Catholic Church. He shared the following observation, “The issue of numbers in our seminaries today should focus in not on the quantity, but rather on the quality of those involved in preparation for ordained ministry. Candidates today must and should reflect a ministry preparation which coincides with the lived reality of Church.”
